Going Green is Fun!
It’s no secret that physically active students do better in school than their more sedentary classmates. But did you know that “wild” nature activities in childhood are correlated to adult interest in the environment? “When children become truly engaged with the natural world at a young age, the experience is likely to stay with them in a powerful way - shaping their subsequent environmental path,” states Nancy Wells, Cornell University. “Our study indicates that participating in wild nature activities like camping before age 11 is a particularly potent pathway toward shaping both environmental attitudes and behaviors in adulthood.”

Take the President's Challenge as a family. Track your individual physical activities together and earn awards for active lifestyles at PresidentsChallenge.org.

Hit the Road Games
Make a Map - Draw your own that has the major stops and cities, and a nice happy drawing for your final destination. Throw in a few simple drawings of landmarks you’ll see along the way, such as a big bridge or a mountain tunnel. A home made map is easy for kids to follow and gives them a clearer picture of how much further there is to go. They can add sites along the way.

Mystery Writing - One child holds out his hand and closes his eyes while the other child “writes” on his hand with her finger.  The first child has to guess what the second person is writing.

License Plate Game - Spot a license plate and call out the letters on it. Then everyone tries to come up with a different phrase using the letters in the order they appear on the license plate as the first letter of each word.

Car Bingo - Use pennies as card markers creating your own cards before the trip.
At the Campground Games
Alphabet Hike - go in order from A - Z; A - ant, B - butterfly, etc.

Scavenger Hunt - make a list of items likely to be found in the surrounding area: berries, ladybug, deer tracks, fern, Y-shaped twig, mud, grain of sand, pine tree, moss, acorn, dew on a leaf, smooth rocks, hole in tree, unusual shaped leaf, seed pod, creek, spider web, feather, birds nest, beetle, caterpillar
